Study of relation (,) of us
It starts with the socio-ecological system, a concept created by Murray Bookchin in the 60s when Bookchin began to pursue the connections between ecological and social issues. He further writes in his paper “What is Social Ecology?”, as an introduction: Social ecology is based on the fact that all our current ecological problems stem from deep social problems. From this perspective, many of these ecological problems cannot be understood, much less solved, without a careful understanding of our existing society and the irrationalities that dominate it. To make this point more concrete: economic, ethnic, cultural, and gender conflicts, among others, lie at the core of the most serious ecological dislocations we face today—arguably, those produced by natural disasters.
As an individual, is the concern that no ecological issue can be solved unless there is a wider group of people active, otherwise there are no results in change. But this is not a problem in thinking of change and the future.
The idea is to understand what Bookchin further says in his essay, clearly showing that humans do not control nature or the change in nature if we think of ourselves as separate from it. It is the way relationships are created between different environments or ecosystems that influence each other to create a functional system. People and individuals of society are part of the environment in the same way as what we refer to as nature. The human environment itself is nature.
Based on this, the work aims to contextualize and explore the concept of socio-ecology within a specific society and be a tool through which we can understand the genealogy of a society, how it is built, and how it functions, fostering a deeper understanding on many different "irrationalities that dominate it" as Bookchin says.
The work was part of a group exhibition as a result of the research work during NFRARED Art Residency by Foundation 17 in Prishtina.
INFRARED Art Residency focuses on issues related to the environment and aims to promote research and artistic development around it.
